Description

Join Sir Peter and Lady Walters in the grounds of their Georgian rectory on the Sussex Downs for a summer's evening of music, food and wine. The Summer Evening Promenade Concert will be a unique occasion to enjoy a programme of music and song while promenading around the beautiful landscaped garden - a favourite of visitors who enjoy the National Garden Scheme's open garden days (view the garden here).


Date: Saturday 14 July from 5.30pm

This exclusive event for a limited number of guests, will include:

Wiston Estate sparkling wine reception

Lutenist playing in the woodland tree house

Opera arias led by tenor Ben Smith in the garden gazebo

Five-piece jazz band playing in the consevatory

Garden supper with wine


Seating around the garden is limited and we advise you to bring your own portable seats. In the event of inclement weather the concert and supper will take place in a marquee on the lawns in front of the conservatory. Please note that infirm and disabled access is not available to all parts of the garden.


The event will run from 5.30pm to approximately 9.30pm, with the music ending at 8pm.

Ben Smith

Welsh tenor Ben Smith is the Sir Peter and Lady Walters Soirée d'Or scholar supported by a Douglas and Hilda Simmonds Scholarship at the Royal College of Music, studying with Tim Evans-Jones and Gary Matthewman. He will join the Glyndebourne Chorus for the 2018 season performing also at the BBC Proms. Recent roles include Nemorino L’elisir D’amore for Arcadian Opera and for RCM scenes and Don Ottavio (cover) Don Giovanni for British Youth Opera. Ben has participated in masterclasses with Roger Vignoles, Malcolm Martineau, Toby Spence, Rebecca Evans and Patricia MacMahon. He performed at Buckingham Palace for HRH the Prince of Wales with conductor John Wilson and was subsequently invited to perform at Symphony Hall with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra with Wilson.



Jonatan Bougt

Swedish guitarist and theorbo player Jonatan Bougt is currently studying for his Master's degree in Historical Performance at the Royal College of Music as a Musicians’ Company Scholar and is a recipient of a Thora Olsson Scholarship and a Helge Ax:son Johnson Scholarship and a Kempe-Carlgrenska Fonden Scholarship. Having recently graduated from the Bachelor of Music course with a First Class Honours degree, he is the winner of the RCM Guitar Competition 2017. Other noteworthy awards include the 1st Prize in the Jörgen Rörby Competition (2014) of the Swedish Guitar & Lute Society and the 1st Prize in the Young Talents Competition of Uppsala International Guitar Festival (2013). Jonatan has performed in venues such as the Royal Festival Hall, Queen’s Gallery, Amaryllis Flemming Concert Hall, Britten Theatre, Snape Maltings Concert Hall (UK), Stockholm Concert Hall and Uppsala Konsert&Kongress Concert Hall (Sweden), Centro Cultural Justicia Federal, (Brazil) and Große Universitätsaula, Austria.
