IMAGINED LANDSCAPES- Mixed-media painting

British landscape artists Peter Lanyon talked about ‘placeness’ while David Bomberg tried to capture ‘the spirit of place’. Art has never been about copying what we see but bringing together our thoughts, feelings and understanding as well as our visual observations into the work.

Starting with your own drawings, photographs and memories of a landscape you will learn how to bring out ‘your personal vision’ through exercises in colour, composition and use of materials. Each day will be structured with relevant slide lectures and demonstrations on the use of materials that include acrylic and water-based paint, pastels, pencils, charcoal and collage. You will be guided through the creative process of development, starting with smaller studies and ending the week with a resolved piece of work.

BIOGRAPHY

Colin describes his work as primarily mixed-media and landscape-based.

His work has explored themes about boundaries, borders and frontiers in respect to refugee migration; tensions of national identity within the Union of the United Kingdom; and ‘holy ’sites such as Iona and Lindisfarne. His most recent exhibition focussed on the monasteries and priories of Yorkshire. His artist statement read-

‘Even though it is their physical locations that inspire me it is back in my studio that a piece will take emotional shape, and the spirit of the place is realised. I love colour and express this through a variety of materials that includes oil, acrylic and water-based paint, oil pastel, collaged imagery, particularly maps, I will add and take away until its required “rightness” is achieved, through the creative process of distillation’.

He has had work exhibited in the annual group exhibitions for the Royal Scottish Academy, the Royal Scottish Society of Watercolours and Visual Arts Scotland in Edinburgh. His solo exhibitions have been at the Open Eye Gallery, Edinburgh, Leith School of Art, Edinburgh, and most recently at the Watermark Gallery, Harrogate.

He studied at the Royal College of Art and the Chelsea School of Art in London, worked as a graphic designer and taught art and design for many years. He spent twenty-five years teaching at Leith School of Art and now lives in York with his wife Sallie where they run Seek Art School www.seekartschool.co.uk.
