Event description

Learn painting skills through exercises in colour, tone and composition and gain the confidence to paint at home. Presented as part of Phoenix Brighton's Summer Arts School.

This course is aimed at beginners, those wanting to know the basics about how to even start a painting. It is also open to those who have painted a little, but still feel very much a beginner. The aim of the course is to provide the student with the knowledge to start painting and to feel confident at the end of the course in starting to paint at home. This will be done by looking at basic materials, equipment and techniques. The course will also cover the formal elements of making a painting through painting exercises that include, colour, tone and composition on easels. Denise will provide a different subject each day to paint. The groups will be small and informal so that she can spend time tutoring each person.

The student will be encouraged to keep a small sketchbook to note down ideas, make drawings and collect images in between lessons as well as using it during the lessons to note key points and create a collection of paint mark making, therefore, a journal of the course.

Some basic materials and equipment, including acrylic paper and easels, will be provided. Students will need to bring: range of synthetic brushes; acrylic paint (cadmium yellow, cadmium red, cyan and ultramarine blue, burnt umber, white); A5 sketchbook; masking tape. Optional: other painting surfaces e.g. canvas or acrylic board; other acrylic paints (not black); pallette knife.

Costs: £100
Days: 4 mornings
Times: 10am – 1pm
Dates: 29 August - 1 September
Room: Main Gallery
Maximum: 10

About Phoenix Brighton Arts Courses

Phoenix Brighton’s arts courses provide a unique mix of high quality workshops aimed at practicing and aspiring artists and art lovers at all levels. They are suitable for anyone (from beginners upwards unless otherwise stated) who wants to learn new skills from professional artists and would like to meet likeminded people in a supportive and creative environment. We normally provide all the basic materials unless stated in the course descriptions. You need to register in advance as some popular courses fill up very quickly.

All courses are aimed at adults (over 18) unless otherwise stated. Course fees are kept as low as possible to encourage everyone to participate in the arts, including those on low incomes but not eligible for benefits, such as many artists. Therefore we do not offer separate concessionary rates for members of the public. We are unable to offer discounted rates for other reasons, for instance if you are unable to attend all the sessions, unless the course has already started and has unfilled spaces.
