About this event

  • 2 days 7 hours

Printmaking is an engaging and absorbing process, an act of image making that can enable you to transform your ideas into a spectacular outcome that can’t be replicated in any other medium. During this three-day Summer School, printmaker Scarlett Rebecca will help you to develop your drawings into finished work, guiding you through relief, intaglio and planographic printmaking techniques.

Through a myriad of printmaking processes, we will explore the four pillars of image-making: line, tone, shape and colour. Scarlett will introduce the processes and support you in developing your own personal method of developing an image. On the third day you will have the opportunity to pull together the threads of your investigations to develop a printed edition.

The course is suitable for people who have drawn before but have never done any printmaking, or for more experienced printmakers who want to explore new ways of working. If you have drawings that you’d like to develop into more finished work, if you want to learn more about printmaking or if you want to explore your ideas under expert tuition, this course is for you.

What to expect

Day 1
Line & tone. After an introduction we’ll start the summer school using foil lithography and drypoint engraving to explore mark making techniques in black and white, using a range of wet and dry drawing materials.

Day 2
Colour & shape. On day two we will explore colour, starting the day with a colour mixing demonstration. Using card collagraph and monotype we will employ spontaneous and intuitive painterly mark making with bold graphic texture and shape.

Day 3
Developing personal projects. On the final day we’ll develop personal projects with guidance and feedback from Scarlett, using the processes from the previous days.  The course will culminate in a mini exhibition in the studio and group feedback session. And then... off to the pub!

Places are limited to 12 students and pre-booking is essential. If you have any questions email us at info@draw-brighton.co.uk The workshop runs from 10am-5pm on Monday 19th, Tuesday 20th & Wednesday 21st August 2024, with a 1-hour lunch break - you are welcome to bring a packed lunch, or to pop to the nearby Sainsbury’s, or a café on London Road. There will also be extra teabreaks throughout the day.
