About this event

2 Day Winter Academy - On Line

Intersectional and Feminist Perspectives on Environmental Loss and Damage in the Environmental Movement in the European Space?

How do we make sense of all the environmental crises we have suffered in the European space from an intersectional perspective? In the face of huge environmental challenges, tipping points and crises and the fear of the future, how do these impact different sections of the community and how do they cross over into intersectional considerations?

What are the costs and losses and damages to different communities and how do we interpret these, understand them, minimise them and prevent more loss and damage.? How do these relate to the wider community who are also struggling to come to terms with a rapidly changing environment in some cases not seen for 1200 years or more in other aspects much longer- how do we protect Europe from these challenges- and how do leverage the new found European strength as a new found tool to address such challenges- how does it mature and develop the very concept of Europe. Has Europe found a new voice?

What are the financial and economic structures and budgeting methodologies needed to support an intersectionally beneficial outcome? How do we achieve this and what economic and financial structures, tools and modalities need modification.?

We will aim to use the learnings from this year’s 2022 environmental crises in different European Countries and explore the intersectional perspectives of impacts both long and short term and how to address, mitigate and avoid more challenges in the future from an intersectional perspective. Activities and gathering evidence and sharing examples. Video interveiwing and making

Intersectional considerations are now considered to be some of the most important in solving the intersecting environmental crises of our age and it is vital that the movement addressing this reflects the nature and complexity of its challenges.

This late summer school will offer participants real insights into the intersectional aspects and issues and challenges of the environmental movement. It is part of our Feminists in the Environmental Movement Project for 2022.

Environmental impacts are very gendered with women and girls young people and most vulnerable communities- often being in the frontline of effects.80 % of climate victims are women and girls- how this intersects and connects to unequal power structures and economics .

This winter academy explores these issues and encourages participants to share knowledge and experience from around Europe as well as reflecting on what is behind the science, the issues, the waves of feminism and the overall landscape of todays culture and philosophy and how we might shape a better future together.

The course also aims to create a community of alumni able to take the next steps to create change in the world and make it more amenable to intersectional ideas and with greater understand of how it works.

Drawing on the combined experience of the Green European Foundation which works to link institutes, and groups across Europe, Visio and educational organisation in Finland which has led last years Climate Feminist Ambassadors Project, and The Green Economics Institute, a research organisation of the UN which has regular delegations to the United Nations Climate Conferences COPs, and at COP26 led workshops on intersectional and indigenous and feminist perspectives on environmental change and the transition, this late summer school brings together expertise and participants from all over Europe and beyond to share knowledge experience and plans for how to make the world more responsive to feminist and intersectional perspectives.

The winter academy will provide opportunities to interact and network with experts and people active in these areas. It will take place at the tail end of COP27 at which the Green Economics Institute will play an active role with a large delegation and is involved in some of the issues in climate finance and in COP Conferences designs.

We hope to have participajnt representatives from most countries in Europe and many different intersectional ideas. If you would like to apply to take part please register here via eventbrite.

We will be offering some bursaries from countries with the lowest GDP in Europe and asking people in countries with higher GDPs to help sponsor some places for those who couldnt attend otherwise.

We will be offering a certificate of attendance to all participants who fully complete the course.

the necessity of diversity and intersectional approach in the environment movement, illustrated with few Macedonian examples:

Lecture Dr Liliana Popovska former MP North Macedonia:

1. Great success of the Campaign Clear It Up from 2020-21, led by the Institute for communicational studies – Skopje (journalists, woman president), donor UK Embassy, participants over 40 environmental NGO-s and scientist institutions and individuals. I was part of it as a board member of the Green Institute. Most of the activists were women from different origin - ethnic, religious, political, age, regions. Huge enthusiasm, volunteering work, public earthquake and extraordinary results. The only angry were the dirty businessmen and corruptive politicians. Different sectors involved in cooperation: environmentalists, scientists, civil servants, journalists.

What was achieved:· deep and profound changes in 3 laws on protecting nature and natural resources (water; mineral resources; environmental inspectorates)

Education of wider public: · Civil inspecting council (to control the environmental inspectorates).

Great success of the anti-mining movement in Macedonia, lasting for 6 years. People all over the country joined to help the activists, who were also from different origin, with 2 brave young women in each of the two biggest mines – threats with cyanide and sulfuric acid. From political side, the only party was the green one, with a woman leader. The most active reporters were few women.

Session 3

The workshop will end by showing solutions in supporting and fighting for the rights of the disabled community but also how to support those who have become disabled or have developed mental health problems as a result of climate change.
