Event description

Description

Put your maths skills to use by programming a robot explorer! In this session with Jon Rosewell, you will work in a small group to program a small robotic rover. Your first challenge will be to program the rover to drive forward and backward, to turn left and right, and spin on the spot. Can you use maths make your rover drive an accurate distance? Does adding sensors to your robot let you control it more accurately? As a final challenge, can you program you rover to visit a sequence of locations – and return safely to base?

Please note:

This workshop is strictly for 10–12 year-olds and is aimed at those with little or no experience of computer coding. There will be a short break during the workshop and a drink and a small snack will be provided. Students should bring their own snack if they have any allergies.

Refunds can only be issued for tickets cancelled at least two weeks (14 calendar days) in advance of the event date. Please note that this supersedes our normal event terms and conditions.

About Speaker:

Jon Rosewell is a Senior Lecturer in Information & Communications Technology at the Open University where he has developed and delivered distance learning courses in a variety of subjects. Together with colleague Tony Hirst, he delivers introductory robotics courses to thousands of students each year. He has also supported activities with younger students because robotics is such a rich domain for learning about science, technology, engineering and mathematics – and because robotics will change society and the world we all live in.
