Our 3-day Young Writers’ Summer Sessions take place across the North East, for young people to work on exciting creative writing projects.

About this event

Friday 5, 19 and 26 August, 10am-3pm each day

Venue: Gateshead Library

Open to: ages 12-19

Join us this summer for three days of creative writing! Whether you’re a seasoned writer, would like to try something new, or just enjoy storytelling, these workshops will introduce you to new ways to write and invite you to develop your own artistic ideas.

These summer sessions are for care experienced young people. This includes anyone who currently is or has been in local authority care, kinship care, or been looked after by someone other than immediate family for an extended period of time.

For a chat about what to expect at these sessions, including the support we have in place and any additional needs, please do get in touch with Tess Denman-Cleaver at youngwriters@newwritingnorth.com to arrange a phone call.

Each day will focus on a different form of writing, and you can come to the one that most interests you or book all three.

August 5th: local children's writer and poet Sarah Tarbit (Northern Writers' Award Highly Commended Writer 2020)

August 19th: North East writer Lauren Vevers and non-fiction writer Adam Sharp (Common People: An Anthology of Working-Class Writers)

August 26th: Manchester-based, care experienced poet, playwright and performer Louise Wallwein (author of Radio 4 drama Glue)

Donations

Tickets are free, but if you’re able to, please consider making a donation. Your money will support our free creative writing programmes for 12-25 year olds, which run throughout the year, including in many areas where there are fewer opportunities.

The aim of all our work is to help young people to realise their potential. We develop skills, nurture talent and encourage young people to get involved and have a go at creative writing. We create environments where young writers can make friends, develop their confidence, try out new things and have fun!

Our suggested donation is £25, but anything you can give will enable us to help young people to make brilliant work. Thank you!

Gateshead Young Writers' Group

From September we will be running weekly Young Writers Groups in Gateshead Library, every Saturday during term time between 11am-1pm. Our summer programme is a great way to meet other young writers and find out more about our regular young writers’ programmes.

All of our Summer Writing Sessions will be supported by Gateshead Young Writers' Group Leader, Lauren Vevers.
