Event description
Here is a unique opportunity to experience Summerhill's special, historic environment and explore the many facets of this remarkable school.

About this Event

Summerhill School is turning 100 years old in 2021 and in celebration of our centenary we are planning to organise several events leading up to our Special Anniversary. The 'Summerhill Experience' is going to be the first one in the series, where some staff members and students are staying on at school, for the first part of their summer holiday, to work as volunteers during the event in order to raise funds for The A. S. Neill Centre.

Through participation in a series of carefully designed presentations, seminars and workshops, participants will be able to gain a very clear understanding of the philosophy, character and day-to-day organisation of the Summerhill Community.

The ‘Summerhill Experience’ is a five-day event, designed for:

  • those who might want to implement Summerhill practices into their own workplace,
  • those who wish to start, or are starting, their own school,
  • those who work in education,
  • those studying at college or university,
  • those involved in the field of education,

and those who wish for a better world!

Due to the nature and the structure of the event, we are not in a position to welcome children and young people under the age of 18.

You will have the opportunity to attend presentations, followed by a question and answer session, on the following topics:

  1. The Summerhill Core Philosophy
  2. The Summerhill Meeting Process
  3. Community Life at Summerhill
  4. Social and Emotional development
  5. The Realities of Freedom - the dark side! ‘Summerhill is a real place, not a utopia….
  6. The Teaching and Learning Environment at Summerhill
  7. Policies/ Inspections/ Risk Assessment/ Paperwork
  8. Kids' Focus: Present and Past Pupils’ Experience

There will also be some seminars on associated topics connecting to the main themes. They are yet to be finalised but ideas include:

  • Who is this man Neill? - Readings from Neill’s many works
  • A meeting Workshop - mock cases, difficult situations etc.
  • Swearing and freedom of speech at Summerhill
  • A chat with ‘Old Summerhillians’
  • Centenary Plans: The A. S. Neill Centre

and many more.

You will also have the opportunity to talk to Zoë Neill Readhead and Henry Readhead, who will be leading many of the talks, and also to current staff members, pupils and former ‘Summerhillians'.

Ticket options:

By joining us for the 'Summerhill Experience' event, you will gain a really valuable insight into the inner workings of Summerhill. We have deliberately ensured that the 'Summerhill Experience' is very reasonably priced to make it affordable for all who wish to attend. Our staff and students are giving their time and energy freely in order to keep costs to a minimum. You can show your appreciation for their generosity by making a contribution to the A. S. Neill Centre fund. Your personal donation will make a big difference and help us to take one more step towards achieving our aim. All profits from the event and donations will go directly to the building of the new A. S. Neill Centre. To make a donation click the link and hit ‘Donation'...

The A. S. Neill Centre is our way of celebrating One Hundred Years of Summerhill School and the life and work of the founder, A. S. Neill. We feel that there is a real need for a dedicated space on the school site to enable greater outreach and the promotion of Summerhill and A. S. Neill's educational philosophy. Read more about the building and its purpose on our website and please feel free to donate money in support of our cause.
