It’s October 1979 and a few Aussie and Kiwi backpackers are groggily waking up to the distant sound of church bells on a Sunday morning. “Must be beer o’clock!” one says to the others and they stumble down to the local, The Golden Lion in Fulham Broadway. The proprietor, Sean Sullivan, pulls their pints and tells them he’s putting on a comedian this week as well as the usual Sunday afternoon striptease act. My Sharona by The Knack comes on in the background and the backpackers, beers in hand, move through the smoky pub towards the stage to await the day's entertainment. The Church is born.
35 amazing years, 11 different venues and more than 2 million rowdy Sinners later, The Church truly has become a world famous institution. A ‘must do’ on any OE bucket list.
Debaucherous fun remains the order of the day with comedians, strippers, fancy dress and great classic rock tunes to see you through every sinful Sunday afternoon. We are not your typical, we don’t abide by the rules, The Church is one of a kind and so are our loyal worshippers!!
The main show will run from 2pm - 6pm but our doors and more importantly our bar will remain open until 8pm.
The Church is an almighty, hedonistic Sunday afternoon party that is not for the faint-hearted. If you can handle it…. Let the sin begin!!
