Burgh House presents Sunday Sounds, our recital series showcasing emerging musicians.

Trio Myrthen, taking its name from Robert Schumann’s much adored song cycle, is a London-based piano trio that has performed in the UK and Europe since its formation in 2023 at venues such as Barbican Centre’s Milton Court and London’s Bechstein Hall. Comprising current students (violinist Cyrus Yuen, cellist Wilbert Chan and pianist Myunghan Kim) at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, the trio is mentored by Krzysztof Smietana, Caroline Palmer and Sam Armstrong and has also participated in masterclasses with Ralf Gothoni, Robert Levin and the Endellion Quartet. The trio has recorded at BBC’s Open Music at Maida Vale Studios and was recently finalist in the 27th Luigi Nono International Chamber Music Competition in Italy and semifinalist in the Royal Over-Seas League Chamber Music Competition.

Myunghan Kim is a London-based pianist, who was born in South Korea and began learning piano at the age of five. She studied at the Seoul National University with Professor HieYon Choi and is currently on the Artist Diploma programme at Guildhall School of Music & Drama with Professor Ronan O’Hora, supported by the Guildhall School Trust and Stella Currie Scholarship. Her playing has been recognised on the international stage including 1st Prize in the 2024 Beethoven Society of Europe Piano Competition and 2nd Prize in the 2024 Birmingham International Piano Competition. She performs both solo and chamber music recitals and has participated in masterclasses with renowned pianists such as Richard Goode, Dame Imogen Cooper, Sir Stephen Hough and Paul Lewis.

Cyrus Yuen is a London-based violinist from Hong Kong who has performed across Asia, Europe, and America. Currently pursuing a Bachelor of Music in Violin Performance at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, under the guidance of Professor David Takeno (Eugène Ysaÿe International Chair of Violin). He was a laureate (finalist) of the 2025 Victoria BCN International Violin Competition, and was a finalist in the Luigi Nono International Chamber Music Competition 2024. He has had the privilege of participating in masterclasses with esteemed violinists Nancy Zhou and Tasmin Little CBE. Cyrus is the recipient of several accolades and sponsorships including the EYMT Norman Harper Prize, Essex Young Musician Trust, Brain and Julie Cue Trust, the Guildhall Trust and The Harrison Frank Family Foundation Trust. Cyrus is currently playing on a Pierre Hel violin generously loaned to him from the Harrison-Frank Family Foundation.

Wilbert Chan is a Hong Kong-born British cellist who has performed internationally as a soloist in Asia, Europe and North America. He is currently a Junior Fellow at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama in London under the tutelage of Professor Tim Lowe and is recent finalist of the 22nd Bacewicz International Competition in Poland and 27th Luigi Nono International Chamber Music Competition in Italy. He is also in demand as a chamber musician in collaborations for recitals and concerts, performing as a member of the London-based Trio Myrthen and making regular appearances in chamber music festivals. He has studied with Judith Serkin in the USA and Josef Luitz in Vienna and has also appeared in masterclasses with artists including Adrian Brendel, Leonid Gorokhov, Andrew Shulman, Robert Levin and Ralf Gothóni. He has performed in venues such as London’s Barbican Centre, Milton Court, Bechstein Hall and Royal Albert Hall. He is grateful for the support by the Guildhall School Trust, Help Musicians UK and the Worshipful Company of Girdlers. He plays a 1790 John Betts cello on generous loan from a private sponsor and a modern cello by Frank Ravatin.
