Final Celebration of Sundream: A Summer of Creativity

FREE Theatre, Rerfreshments, Mingle & Music and Enjoy the Coastal Open Exhibition

First performance of Wise Ram Theatre's new play.

The new play Sundream follows Jackie, a no-nonsense 60-something who remembers the glorious long hot summer of 1976 and her teenage romance growing up in Jaywick. In another long hot summer in 2026, she finds herself peculiarly interested in newly arrived eccentric Dave, who takes ‘seeing the bright side of life’ to new extremes. Will she capture the spirit of her youth and triumph over cynicism? Will she finally learn to walk in platform shoes? Will she ever get ‘Don’t Go Breaking My Heart’ out of her head?

Join us for a work in profress performance of Sundream, and other writing from local writers, performed by professional actors. Followed by music and mingling with free celebratory refreshments.

What is Sundream?

Sundream is a programme of free creative activities taking place in Jaywick and Clacton throughout the summer of 2025 exploring the local coast’s past, present and future and what it’s like to live here. The workshops and activities are for anyone who wants to connect with others, learn a new skill or just get creative.

How did you come up with the play?

Ah! Good questions. In the summer, starting in June Wise Ram Theatre asked people who live and work in and around Jaywick and Clacton what their favourite kind of story was. E.g ghost stories, action, romance, buddy comedies, historical dramas, fantasy, mystery or detective stories etc. The answer with the most replies decided what play we started making. So if people loved romance stories? Then the play would be a romantic love story. Maybe the majority of people prefered action thrillers, then we would have made a suspenseful thriller set against the backdrop of the marshes and the beach. And so on.

We found out that people loved comedy most, followed by historical and romance. So we are writing a historical romantic comedy!

Come see the play you helped us create and tell us how to make it better!

Detailed access information about Jaywick Martello Tower

Jaywick Martello Tower can be reached by both walking and by car. There is parking available directly outside the Tower. The pathway to the entrance of the Tower is made up of wooden sleepers which can sometimes become slippery in adverse weather and can be a bit bumpy.

The entrance to the Tower is through a low doorway (approx. 1.55m) and passage which continues for 2.2m which will require ducking to walk through. There is an alternative entrance around the back of the Tower which is taller but is reached by 15 steps with handrail.

Inside the Tower, the event space is accessible by 14 steps with handrail or platform lift. The platform lift is suitable for wheelchair users or those unsteady on their feet who can comfortably move to sit on a chair on the lift but may not be suitable for larger mobility scooters.

There is one WC located at the back of the building that is accessible and available for anyone to use. There is a key on the front desk that a member of staff can provide to access and will assist with opening the door if needed.

Thank you to our funders

We are very grateful to have received funding from Essex County Council’s Arts and Cultural Fund, and the Fowler, Smith & Jones Trust to make Sundream possible.
