Sunrise Yoga at L’Etacquerel Fort
About this event
Sunrise Yoga at L’Etacquerel Fort:
Join Joe and Sharnelle for these exclusive events at L'Etacquerel Fort. Be guided through a sunrise vinyasa yoga class in the ruins of a mid-19th Century fort overlooking Jersey’s rugged north coast.
Everything in nature is made up of five basic elements: earth, water, fire, air, and space. Knowledge of the five elements allows the yogi to understand the laws of nature and to use yoga to attain greater health, power, knowledge, wisdom and happiness.
Traverse the winding coastal path, cross the drawbridge and fuel your motivation for the day. Whilst we stoke our inner flames by creating heat in the body through movement, celebrating the fire element (Agni) of yoga, you'll learn about the flames that forged our Island and fire’s role in transformation.
This session is part of the Wellness Wednesdays series, organised in collaboration with the Aspiring Jersey Island Geopark.

WHY YOGA AT L’ÉTACQUEREL FORT?
L’Étacquerel Fort was built in 1836 to defend this part of the coast from French invasion, the ideal place to build your own resilience and defence against negative energies. The fort is located in a field called La Petite Houguette. Field names like 'hougue' or 'pouquelaye' suggest the existence of an man-made mound nearby, although the structure may no longer be there today. These mounds would have been built thousands of years ago as a burial mound and signified a place of spiritual importance.
The small bay to the right of the fort is below a hill named La Tête des Hougues, another suggestion of a man-made mound nearby. This bay is a site which shows the meeting of two bedrocks: the darker Bouley Bay Rhyolite Formation and the Rozel Conglomerate Formation which was formed by ancient river channels in a time before plants or soils even existed.
