Event description

Description

This year’s conference entitled ‘Reading, Talking, Sharing’ will focus on exploring the relationship between reading and talking in the Early Years. It is an opportunity for Early Years professionals who inspire children and families to enjoy books and read together to share ideas and good practice.

This year we welcome keynote speaker Kathy Goouch, Professor of Early Education at Canterbury Christ Church University. Kathy will present 'Tell, Talk, Tattle: how talking with and about books can support literacy from birth'.

As well as a keynote speech, the conference will include a Carousel of best practice with contributions from practitioners from across Wales. We’ll also offer you an array of interactive workshops to choose from closer to the time. You can visit bookstart.org.uk/superbox to explore last year’s workshops and resources.

Many of the sessions will be based on the Superbox books that delegates will take away with them. Each delegate will receive a ‘Bookstart Super Box’ containing multiple copies of two Bookstart Baby titles and two Bookstart Early Years titles. We want you to leave with plenty of new ideas – and the tools to make put them into practice.

All tickets include the provision of refreshments and lunch.

Bookstart Packs to Parents / Carers

Bookstart Baby packs and Bookstart Early year’s packs are available to all families in Wales and are gifted by their Health Visitor. The first pack is usually gifted at the 6 month health check and the second usually at the child’s 27 month development check. Early years work can play an important role in reminding parents that they are entitled to their pack at 18-24 months.

Key Bookstart messages delivered to parents and carers

  • You are your child’s first and most important teacher. Stories, books and rhymes are an essential part of their development so it’s important to include them in your everyday routine. This will help your child develop the skills they need to enjoy school and do well in their lessons.
  • It is good to start sharing stories, books and rhymes with your child from as early an age as possible. Babies don’t need to understand all the words; they will just love to listen to your voice.
  • Sharing books, talking about the pictures and cuddling up close together will help you to build a strong and loving relationship with your child. Everyone in the family can join in: dads, mums, care givers, grandparents, brothers, sisters, aunties and uncles.
  • Your child will love lots of different kinds of books and will enjoy choosing books them, so it is good to join the library. Libraries welcome every one of all ages, it is free to borrow books and Welsh libraries do not charge fines for late children’s books.

Complete the Bookstart Superbox evaluation

We will send evaluation to each delegate after the conference. This helps us improve and develop the Superbox programme, and feedback from practitioners who have used the resources is invaluable.
