A supportive, helpful and enjoyable workshop to help the experience of hosting refugees even richer
About this event
You are making a generous and compassionate offer to people who have been forced out of their own homes and displaced to another country.
We all know there will be times when sharing your home will be difficult and there are bound to be challenges along the way. We want to support you in the amazing offer you have made and are offering the opportunity to join 3 workshops.
The workshops are available to those who are hosting refugees or are planning to do so and aim to be supportive, helpful and enjoyable, to make the experience of hosting even richer. They will also provide another opportunity to network with others who are in a similar position.
The workshops will take place at 1.30 for 1 hr on 13th June, 4th July and 18th July. The program is designed for participants to attend all three sessions.
Each session will include the following topics;
- The challenges for hosts and guests
- Creating helpful boundaries and house rules
- Understanding and working with cultural and family differences
- Communication and resolving differences
- Accommodating different parenting styles
- Thinking about the needs of children in the joint household
- Understanding and responding to distress and trauma
- Looking after yourself
- When and how to seek help.
The sessions will be confidential and have been created to provide a safe space for open authentic dialogue and discussion.
The sessions are being delivered by Judith Lask and Anne Greaves, therapists and members of the Association for Family Therapy. Anne and Judith have a long experience in helping families navigate new challenges in their lives and will offer some ideas for avoiding problems and strategies for managing them if they arise.
We know that each of you will bring your own skills and experiences to the groups and there will be an opportunity to learn from each other.
The workshop is open to a maximum of 25 participants to create a rich experience and as places are limited we can only offer 1 place per host family household.
We will consider further sessions in the future to support families.
These sessions are supported by Wessex Community Action and Wiltshire Council.
