Chila Kumari Burman -Navigating artistic ambitions and cultural expectations

About this Event

Join artist Chila Kumari Burman to talk about how to navigate a career in the arts against the grain of family and cultural expectations. Chila is particularly interested in offering advice to young artists from South Asian backgrounds.

Participants are invited to bring experiences of personal hurdles and artistic ambitions to share during the session.

*You may only book onto one session in the Support Network series* This and all Support Network sessions are open to early-career, artists of colour only.

Dr. Chila Kumari Burman (Punjabi: ਚਿਲਾ ਕੁਮਾਰੀ ਬਰਮਨ) is an iconic British artist. A significant figure in the Black British Art movement of the 1980s, Burman was one of the first British Asian female artists to have a monograph written about her work: Lynda Nead’s Chila Kumari Burman: Beyond Two Cultures (1995), and a second monograph by Nead was published in 2012. Born in Liverpool, Chila Kumari Burman describes herself as a ‘Punjabi Liverpudlian’ who likes to combine her Indian roots with popular culture. She has been described as a South Asian pop artist.

If you require any further assistance with the application or need to discuss access needs for participation, please drop us an email with a contact telephone number so that we can get back to you and talk through alternative options: admin@deptfordx.org
