Event description
This is a networking event for Supported Employment Practitioners and is open to BASE member organisations only.

About this Event

We are excited to be able to bring you a National BASE Practitioners event hosted by BASE South East Region.

This free to attend event is for practitioners working in organisations that are members of BASE and operate in any region. BASE is keen to engage with service practitioners and this event is aimed at them rather than service managers.

We recognise that working on the frontline can sometimes be isolating, given the pandemic and the changes we have all had to make to the way we work then it seems timely to get together to and learn from others.

We have put together a quality, packed programme of speakers and trainers within our industry and associated sectors. They will deliver engaging and interactive workshops aimed specifically at the needs of Supported Employment frontline staff who are working directly with job seekers and employers.

Why should you attend?

  • Hear from quality guest speakers and trainers
  • Recharge your batteries
  • Learn new ideas
  • Develop your network of contacts and ‘go to people’
  • Continuous professional development

This training event is only open to staff working for organisations that are members of BASE. Registrations will only be accepted if made using a work email address. Maximum or two people from each organisation.

Speakers booked so far include:

John Young

For more than 31 years, John Young presented and reported the TV news on the BBC. He’s now distilled the energy and stories of his career in a TV newsroom into a range of fascinating keynotes and lively consultancy workshops, delivered online or in person. They reveal in jaw-dropping detail how knife-edge TV News production can be. But John doesn’t just bask in the audience’s fascination. He makes it relevant, with key business messages about pivoting skills, crystal clear communication, time management, leadership, self-awareness and courage. They are his own product, not the BBC’s, but are based on his adventures in the front line of daily news reporting and presenting at the world’s most respected broadcaster.

They’re a fascinating insight into how the media actually works. And in the age of Zoom and Teams, they also give a great insight into how to work most effectively whilst communicating down a laptop lens. John’s clients include EasyJet, American Express, Gatwick Airport, the international CEO network Vistage, the English Rugby Football Union and several local authorities.

John uses income from his professional clients to subsidise employability skills workshops for young people who are not in formal education or training. During the spring of 2020, John redesigned all his material for delivery online, as well as face-to-face ... based on his belief that in business, we're all broadcasters now.

Kathy Melling - Melling Training and Consultancy

Kathy has worked in the supported employment sector since the late 1970s in both the USA and UK and was a very lucky person to be trained by Marc Gold. She has been involved with BASE since its inception. She now works as a consultant and trainer after a longer career in public services. In her spare time, Kathy supports a range of community and voluntary sector organisations in Kent as well as Charlton Athletic.

Audrey Bodman - Outshine Telephone Training & Resources Ltd

Audrey is a specialist in telephone training techniques. She has been self-employed for over 28 years and specialises specifically in Employer Engagement, Sales and Customer Service Training. She has been delivering employer engagement skills and cold calling skills within the Welfare to Work, Social Care and Skills sector for over 25 years, having previously been a job club leader and former NVQ assessor prior to setting up her own business.

Her past and present clients include Scope, Shaw Trust, Mencap, Leeds Mind, NHS Trusts to name a few. Prior to the current client she travelled all over the UK working with organisations helping unemployed into work. Her goal is to make a difference and for this reason she continues to host mini free training sessions in the hope one of her tips will help those who attend open doors quicker. Even with the current ‘lockdown’ she’s busier than ever delivering training online for organisations who see now how important the phone is.

She lives in Bristol with her husband and 2 large boxer dogs. The mother of 2 boys, 28 and 26, and a grandmother of 3! She's a keen runner too.

Huw Davies - Chief Executive of BASE

Huw has been the chief executive of the BASE since 2008. He previously chaired the association from its formation in 2006 and chaired one of its predecessor associations, AfSE, from 2002 to 2006. He is one of the Vice-Presidents of the European Union of Supported Employment. From 1993 to 2007, Huw was manager of Bury EST, a local authority supported employment agency that provided employment support for disabled jobseekers, care leavers, recovering drug misusers, minority ethnic communities and job retention projects.
