Supporting a young person who is dysregulated or in melt-down
Overview
When I started supporting Autistic & ADHD young people back in 2007, I was a bit of a lump and could move fairly quickly being a rugby player. As a result, I tended to be allocated the more energetic, unpredicatable and persistent young people. Often young people who could be triggered towards dysregulation and experince melt-downs. Something I look back on with enternal gratitude. It gave me a career I found interesting and was passionate about. It allowed me to meet people who changed me and made me work to become better as a support worker and a person in general.
I moved into more senior roles and started to try to develop and define my approaches. Being the person 'on-call' for any dysregulation across three services with 80 staff and hundreds of different service users gave me plenty of practice. I didn't always get it right but managed to be able to focus on what I was doing and how it tended to effect things.
I have been teaching me 3C de-escalation model since 2013 to parents, professionals, schools and organisations. As a parent now myself, I feel these approaches and this model can be helpful to any parent or professional supporting any young person, regardless of Neurotype. Whilst I would say that they are an essential for any Neurodivergent person, I am confident they can be supportive and postive to all.
In this webinar I will break down the effects of dysregulation on the brain. How we can use incidents of dysregulation to create more pro-active support. The 3C de-escalation model I use with young people in more detail with more examples and specific tools then ever before. As well as some interactive activities to do live or whilst watching the recording.
If you are a parent or professional working with a child or young person who wants to give the best support when they are dysregulated, I hope you can join me live or sign up to catch the recording.
Don't forget, you can catch all live and recorded webinars as well as extra content and exclusive extended podcast epidsodes over on our patroen page Neurodiveplus.
