Supporting children with SEND or any additional learning needs through loss and bereavement requires additional considerations. With a focus on communication, you will be guided through how to develop a bereavement-aware culture within your setting whether supporting a bereaved pupil or managing a death within the school community.

Who is this training for?

This training is suitable for professionals working in mainstream and specialist schools, including teachers and teaching assistants; keyworkers and members of a welfare or pastoral support team; SENCO; and others directly supporting bereaved young people as well as senior leaders, governors and policy makers. It is also suitable for those working with young people within the education sector including therapists, health care teams, nurses and other support staff.

What will I learn?

During this training, you will:

  • Gain an understanding of how children and young people experience, understand and respond to bereavement at different developmental levels.
  • Increase awareness of the additional challenges faced by bereaved children and young people with autism.
  • Develop confidence in providing support to, and communicating with, bereaved children and young people with special educational needs and autism.
  • Increase awareness of our own needs when supporting bereaved children and young people with special educational needs.
  • Gain information about Child Bereavement UK and other support organisations and resources available.

Before booking on any training, please read our training terms and conditions. We encourage prospective participants to consider their own experience of loss and how it might affect them during training. Our training may not be suited to someone who has experienced a recent bereavement.
