Supporting care experienced learners (in Primary Schools)
Overview
Fully Funded Training - Supporting care experienced learners: Taking a trauma informed approach to behaviour
Funded by Welsh Government, Adoption UK (AUK) Cymru are delighted to offer free online training to Early Years, Primary and Secondary schools and settings. In the three-hour session, explore why adopted and care experienced learners may have challenges in regulating their behaviour and learn about strategies to support them effectively and compassionately.
This particular session is being delivered in English.
If you would like to attend this training delivered in Welsh, please contact AUK Cymru Education Lead Julie.moseley@adoptionuk.org.uk.
All behaviour is communication!
In 2022 the Adoption UK Barometer survey of adoptive parents across the UK found that 62% of adopted children in school experienced social and emotional struggles as well as difficulties regulating their behaviour. This provides challenges for children, schools and parents and can mean that children are unable to take their place in the classroom. From the adoption barometer respondents, we understand that adopted children are twice as likely to be excluded and in 2023 17% had been put on a reduced timetable or asked not to attend school events.

With funding from the Welsh Government, Adoption UK Cymru has developed free training for staff in early years, Primary or Secondary schools and settings. In this three-hour session, you will explore why adopted and care experienced learners may have challenges in regulating their behaviour. You will find out about therapeutic and relational approaches used by adoptive parents and carers and how they can be adapted to school situations. There will be opportunities discuss the theory behind this and to share experiences with other practitioners.
The training will be led by AUK Cymru’s Education Lead, an adopter and teacher with 33 years’ experience to SLT level. They will provide examples of good practice and top tips from adoptees and adopters to give school staff an opportunity to find out about strategies that work.
You can also integrate this fully funded training with whole school INSET days. Training is available in person or virtually with flexibility around dates and times.
