Description

Registration is free for this programme, however your school / setting will be billed following attendance.

These sessions are predominantly designed for NQTs and RQTs but would also be suitable for those who would like to gain more understanding of how to meet the needs of learners with English as an additional language.

Each session promotes understanding through a range of theory and practical strategies and is facilitated by highly experienced EAL colleagues from the Better Bilingual team.

They are available as 6 stand alone half day sessions, but can be purchased with a reduction in cost for the full programme. Each afternoon session costs £85, with the full programme of 6 sessions costing £400.

Dates offered are as follows:




Session 1: Tuesday 16th January 2018: 9.00am - 12.00pm

Supporting Pupils who are new to English - induction and initial assessment for new arrivals

Participants will be enabled:

  • to consider the diverse needs of newly arrived learners
  • to explore the school’s role in identifying and meeting these needs in terms of ensuring that newly arrived learners and their families are warmly welcomed and feel safe and secure in the school environment
  • to understand the different aspects of the initial assessment process and how to use this information to plan appropriate learning experiences during the induction period.




Session 2: Tuesday 16th January 2018 1.30pm - 4.30pm

Effective teaching and learning stratgies for pupils new to English

Participants will be enabled:

  • to understand the key principles of good learning and teaching practice in relation to new arrivals
  • to explore a range of approaches that support curriculum access and English language development for learners who are bi-lingual/new to English
  • to become familiar with a range of appropriate resources to underpin the learning and teaching of learners new to English.




Session 3: Tuesday 20th February 2018: 9.00am - 12.00pm

Advanced Bilingual Learners - building vocabulary and sentence structures through oracy

Participants will be enabled:

  • to be aware of a range of strategies to increase the range and depth of learners’ academic vocabulary.
  • to develop an awareness of typical EAL related errors in speaking and writing
  • to explore a range of resources including the use of Tower Hamlets’ language structures to enhance and extend learners’ spoken language structures in preparation for writing.




Session 4: Tuesday 20th February 2018: 1.30pm - 4.30pm

Advanced bilingual learners - enhancing reading and comprehension skills and written fluency

Participants will be enabled:

  • to develop an awareness of the typical barriers for EAL learners in accessing and engaging with vocabulary and text.
  • to know effective approaches and resources to develop proficiency in reading comprehension and vocabulary through inclusive Quality First Teaching strategies bridging talk to text.



Session 5: Tuesday 13th March 2018 - 9.00am - 12.00pm

Bilingual Pupils: Involving and engaging families to build positive partnerships and raise attainment

Participants will be enabled:

  • to explore successful approaches to promoting effective home-school partnerships with parents and carers of BME/EAL newly arrived learners
  • to plan ways forward for own settings to further engage parents and carers of BME/EAL newly arrived learners building on what is already in place.




Session 6: Tueday 13th March 2018 - 1.30pm - 4.30pm

EAL or SEN? Understanding the distonction and how to move forward

Participants will be enabled:

  • to clarify what is meant by the terms EAL and SEN
  • to understand the process that can be used to decide if a learner’s needs relate to EAL, SEND or both
  • to identify appropriate actions to address these needs.
