Supporting children with Hearing Impairment in the mainstream classroom

Julie Mather, Nottingham University Samworth Academy
Suzanne Harrigan, Speech and Language Therapist, The Ear Foundation

This seminar will take a wide-ranging look at the effects of deafness on learning and how schools can enable deaf young people to reach their potential through an inclusive environment and also by judicious use of specific interventions. The seminar will focus on how hearing technologies have created a huge diversity of needs in the population of children with hearing losses. There will be particular attention to the teaching of reading and also encouraging emotional literacy.
