Introduction to PANS and PANDAS for Education Professionals
PANS (Paediatric Acute-onset Neuropsychiatric Syndrome) and PANDAS (Paediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Streptococcal Infections) are post infectious medical conditions that can significantly affect both the physical and mental health of children and young people. These conditions are triggered by common infections such as strep throat (PANDAS), chickenpox, COVID-19, or influenza. Diagnosis must be made by a medical professional.
Despite growing recognition, PANS and PANDAS are still frequently misunderstood. Families report that neurodivergent children and young people are particularly vulnerable to misdiagnosis.
Children or young people with PANS or PANDAS may suddenly struggle in school showing a wide range of symptoms including:
- Obsessive thoughts
- Tics
- Anxiety including separation anxiety
- Regressive behaviours
- Changes in mood or personality
- Eating and sleep problems
- Sensory issues
- Motor abnormalities
- Decline in the quality of schoolwork
- Handwriting changes
These symptoms can fluctuate and co-occur with other conditions and/or neurodivergence often resulting in the unexpected onset of special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). Early intervention and support is known to lead to better outcomes.
