Event description

Description

  • Are you a professional or organisation working with deaf children who are new to the UK and do not speak English or have limited English proficiency?
  • Are you looking for ideas and advice for how to improve the support you give to deaf children who use English as an additional language?

Deaf children who are new to the UK and do not speak English as their first language are likely to face more challenges than hearing children who are EAL learners.
This pilot workshop will set out these challenges and outline some strategies to address them. You’ll leave the workshop with new ideas and approaches to ensure the best possible outcomes

By the end of this workshop, you will:

1) Feel more confident in using tools or assessments to identify deaf EAL children’s language skills and to monitor progress

2) Have a better understanding of the various issues to consider when working with deaf children and their families where EAL is a contributing factor.

3) Feel more confident in differentiating their teaching strategies and styles to support deaf EAL learners in the school setting.

4) Understand the importance of working effectively with other professionals, such as interpreters, bilingual teaching assistants and EAL coordinators.

Those who attend the workshop will also get the opportunity to preview and feedback on a new ‘Supporting the achievement of deaf children who have English as an Additional Language’ resource, which will not be published until early 2018.

Please note that this workshop is focused on deaf children who speak English as an additional language because they are new to the UK, rather than deaf children whose first language is British Sign Language.

The workshop will be led by Teacher of the Deaf, Kate Dixon, who has many years of experience of working with multi-lingual deaf children.

This workshop is being provided with support from the Bell Foundation.
