Event description

Are you a Teacher of the Deaf who needs to better understand how to support post-16 students?

Since the Children and Families Act 2014 local authorities are responsible for supporting young people with SEN and disabilities up to 25. This means sensory support services have a greater role in supporting deaf students in further education.

Our one-day workshop, devised for Teachers of the Deaf will help you ensure that deaf young people are given the best possible support in post-16 settings such as further education colleges and apprenticeships. You’ll have the opportunity to discuss how to adapt to meet the needs of post-16 students and to develop a stronger understanding of the post-16 education context.

Key themes:

  • Understanding the range of post-16 providers that exist
  • Differences in supporting post-16 students compared with under-16s
  • The content of 16-19 study programmes including Maths and English
  • Supporting young people on apprenticeships
  • Information and advice on supporting an effective transition to post-16 education and employment

*We use the term ‘deaf’ to describe all young people with a hearing loss from mild to profound.

What are my transport options for getting to and from the event?

By Bus – take the Fairfield St exit from the station (signed “local buses”). As you leave the station by the taxi stand the bus stop is immediately on your right on the same side of the road. You can take any of the bus numbers; 192, 196, 201, 203, 204, 205 and ask for Ardwick Green (approx 5 minute journey).

On Foot – (0.5 miles / 12 minutes) take the Fairfield St exit from the station. Walk straight ahead and cross Fairfield St by the pedestrian crossing (ignoring the crossing to the right). Follow London Road under the railway bridge. Continue past the McDonald Manchester hotel following the sign for the A6 to Stockport. Cross under the flyover (Mancunian Way) and London Road becomes Downing Street. Continue past Storage King and the School of Sound Recording until you arrive at Ardwick Green North. Turn left past the army base and follow the road around to the right behind the park. The St Thomas Centre is the church building on the left set back from the street next to Cotter Street.

From Victoria Station – On arrival you can transfer onto the Metrolink tram with your train ticket for your journey to Piccadilly Station. Exit Piccadilly Station and take a bus or walk as outlined above.
