Overview

With a strong focus on practical application, attendees will learn how to support young people learning and growth.

This course explores how professionals can better understand and respond to the developmental and learning needs of children and young people. Grounded in developmental theory and trauma-informed practice, the session provides a comprehensive look at how cognitive, emotional, social, and physical development unfolds, and how adversity can alter these pathways. With a strong focus on practical application, attendees will learn how to support learning and growth.

Why it Matters
Children and young people’s development is shaped by both internal and external factors, including relationships, safety, and emotional wellbeing. When professionals have the tools to recognise developmental needs and barriers to learning, they are better positioned to create environments that nurture growth and resilience. This course equips practitioners with insight and strategies to help children feel capable, connected, and motivated, especially those who may have experienced trauma or disruption.

Course Highlights

  • Explore key stages of development across childhood and adolescence, including the effects of trauma, neglect, and loss.
  • Learn how emotional states, relationships, and settings influence learning, and how to adapt approaches accordingly.
  • Gain practical tools to support independence, emotional regulation, confidence, and decision-making in young people.
