Supporting Developmental Language Disorder in Higher Education
Overview
ABOUT THIS TRAINING:
This is a 2-hour PASSHE (Professional Association of SpLD Specialists in HE) Accredited training session. This training is primarily for Specialist Tutors but would also be suitable for Disability Advisors, Study Advisors, Tutors and Counsellors working directly with students in HE and FE.
Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) is a neurodevelopmental brain difference affecting an individual’s understanding and/or use of language to the extent that it has a life-long functional impact.
It is important that specialist tutors in higher education know about DLD because of its prevalence (around 7%) and impact on education (Dubois et al., 2020), employment (Conti-Ramsden & Durkin, 2012), and mental health (Kilpatrick et al., 2019).
This training will be delivered by Dr Victoria Cartledge-Mann who is the Academic Director of the SpLD Service at the University of Sheffield and has worked as a Specialist tutor since 2009. During her session Victoria aims to give a brief overview of DLD, the impact of DLD, the experiences of young people (ages 18 – 25+) with DLD, and how DLD can be supported.
The training is being delivered via Zoom on Thursday 22nd January 2026, starting at 1.00pm. Attendees will be provided with the Zoom link and advance documents a week prior to the event. PASSHE members please click on the MEMBER ticket option to book at your member ticket rate.
