Supporting families when a child is dying and when a child dies

This online training is an opportunity to consider the impact on a family when a child is dying and when a child dies. We will also discuss the experiences of families following the death of a child, and how best to provide support.

Who is this training for?

This training is suitable for individuals whose work brings them into contact with families before and after a child has died: for example, health and social care staff, hospice staff, faith leaders, charities. Separate training for training for child death review professionals is available.

What will I learn?

During this training, you will:

• Increase awareness of how parents, siblings and family members facing the anticipated death of a child or young person may respond.
• Consider helpful communication with families before the expected death of a child.
• Hear how parents and siblings bereaved of a child may respond to loss, death and bereavement.
• Gain an understanding of the thoughts, feelings and behaviours that accompany grief.
• Develop greater confidence in supporting bereaved families.
• Recognise the importance of looking after ourselves and identify ways of supporting ourselves.
• Receive information about Child Bereavement UK and other similar support organisations, and resources available.
