Supporting Home Safety for Children Under Five Years

Accidents are a leading cause of death and serious injury for children and young people. Many of these accidents can be prevented.

This short online course (2 ½ hours including a short break) is designed to help health and child care staff delivering the Healthy Child Programme (0-5) to learn about the main hazards for children and babies and to explore how best to to get safety messages across to parents and carers. The training combines presentations, group activities and time for discussion.

The course will dispel myths, and make clear which hazards present the greatest danger of death and which result in hospital admissions and life-long consequences.

The trainer will draw on real-life examples and national and local data as well as encouraging participants to share knowledge, dilemmas and practical experience.

The training will also highlight key resources that participants can use after the course as well as how to access ongoing free information via CAPT's website.

171 health and social care professionals that attended 13 of these courses across 2022-23 ‘agreed’ or ‘strongly agreed’ that after the training they were better able to provide home safety messages and recommendations to the families that they work with.

Comments from Durham course participants that attended the first six courses in the series, 2023-2024

I will feel more confident when discussing home safety and rather than talk about risks I will talk about what the child is doing and then tailor my discussion to the child's level of development.’

I will use CAPT’s ‘One Step Ahead’ poster on developmental changes and what to expect next.’

The trainer was brilliant today. It is often hard to keep people focused and engaged on Teams on an afternoon, but I felt it was just the right level of talking and then different activities.’

Thank you. Everyone who works with 0-5s should attend (this course) to raise awareness.’

After the course

Course participants will receive an attendance certificate plus a comprehensive handout pack after the course. The pack will include a pdf copy of the course slides and several resources referenced during the training.
