Course Aim:

To equip activity providers, care staff andmanagers with the knowledge, tools and confidence to make activities more accessible to individuals with hearing loss or deafness.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Explain the different types of hearing loss and deafness and their impact on communication, participation and wellbeing.
  • Apply key principles from NAPA’s guidance to support access and inclusion in everyday activities.
  • Recognise the role of adaptations, hearing services and assistive technology in reducing barriers.
  • Adapt environments and activities to meet a range of hearing needs and communication preferences.
  • Use inclusive communication strategies in both group and one-to-one settings

Course Structure and Learning Methods

Morning Session – Understanding Hearing Loss and Deafness

Expert Insights: Presentation from Symphony Hearing audiologists covering types, causes and signs of hearingloss, including age-related and profound deafness and the role of assistive technologies (e.g. Symphony Sound’s‘Roger Room Kit’)

Interactive Exercises: Experiential learning focused on the impact of hearing loss and the benefits of technology.

Afternoon Session – Practical Adaptations and Inclusive Activity Design

NAPA Guidance Overview: Key recommendations, case examples and tools for inclusive activity planning

Practical Workshop: How to adapt music, games,reminiscence, arts & crafts and social activities for accessibility.
