Description

1 DAY COURSE - 10.00am - 4.30pm Thursday 11th January 2018

Following the successful launch of two Hearing Voices peer support groups at Colnbrook and Harmondsworth Immigration Removal Centres, we’re offering a free Hearing Voices Awareness training to people who work in Immigration Removal Centres and Foreign National Prisons.

This one-day awareness training will specifically develop knowledge and awareness around hearing voices, as well as a grounding in skills enabling people to support people detained in IRCs and Foreign National Prisons who hear voices.

According to the Ministry of Justice (2013), 25% of women and 15% of men detained in prison report symptoms indicative of 'psychosis' (including distress around hearing voices, seeing things or beliefs). This percentage is likely to be much higher in IRCs and Foreign National Prisons, where many detainees have experienced some form of trauma in their life before detention.

ABOUT THE COURSE

Training will lead to better understanding of how hearing voices, seeing visions, having other sensory experiences and beliefs might affect people who are detained in an Immigration Removal Centre or Foreign National Prison.

Topics covered include:

  • Exploring diverse experiences & understandings of voices, visions & 'psychosis'
  • Coping strategies
  • Pathways to recovery

We run separate training courses on how to facilitate Hearing Voices Groups. This one-day training is not a necessary precursor to the group facilitation training, however, it's a good taster of the way we work, our ethos and will develop solid skills for individual working.

FEES

The training is free for those that work in an Immigration Removal Centre or Foreign National Prison, whether employed by the IRC/Prison itself, or for an organization that works within an IRC/Prison.

To apply for a place, please register your interest. We shall then be in touch to confirm your booking.
