Description

1 DAY COURSE - 10.00am - 4.00pm Friday 21st June 2019

Supporting People with Unusual Beliefs in Forensic settings

You may already be aware of the Hearing Voices Group approach, but working with people with beliefs or paranoia can sometimes feel a step further. To talk to people about their beliefs may bring up anxiety in us - should I challenge them or should I listen? If I don't challenge, will this be 'collusion'? In a forensic setting, this might also carry additional weight, because of concerns around ‘risk’.

In this training, we will explore:

  • Understanding and reframing paranoia and beliefs

  • Ways to cope with distressing beliefs

  • Safe ways of talking about distressing beliefs

  • Our personal reactions to people with strong beliefs, and how this can impact on our work with them

  • Reflection on risk and on the challenges of creating and maintaining peer support groups in these settings

Background:

Hearing Voices Groups are safe spaces for people who hear voices, have other sensory experiences or have unusual beliefs to meet with one another in an atmosphere of mutual support and respect. They are not therapy or treatment, but provide people with the opportunity to explore their experiences, make sense of them and find ways of living with them. All groups are based on the ethos of the Hearing Voices Network which promotes an open and accepting atmosphere where all interpretations and experiences are valid.

How to apply:

To apply for a place on this training day, please fill out an Eventbrite application. We'll then be in touch at a later date to confirm your booking.
