About this event

Catherine warmly invites you to an online presentation and Q & A.

This session will be of interest to anyone caring for and supporting people who are displaying an interest in masturbation and are needing guidance with where, when and how.

The impact of not being able to meet this need in a healthy way can result in frustration, inappropriate and challenging behaviours, inability to concentrate, infection, physical bodily harm and vulnerability.

The session covers many aspects including the use of social stories, video, demonstration with models, aids, attitudes and safe-guarding with time for Q&A.

The aim is for parents, carers and professionals to feel informed and prepared to support in an appropriate, safe and healthy way, if needed.

It is a confidential session and so no recording will take place. It is interactive and so only one person per screen.

There are only spaces for 10 participants.

Catherine is a trained and experienced group facilitator.

Catherine is a parent of two, one of whom is a 21 year old with learning difficulties, autism, Adhd and is non-speaking.

She has 'walked her talk'.

TESTIMONIALS:

• “Your zoom session was the best of the pandemic. Your facilitation created a warm, supportive, informative and fun space to explore a private topic in a safe way. I am inspired to have some conversations in a direct and clear way and feel more confident about using your social stories to support them to live a fuller, more enjoyable life.”

- Sarah.

• "A healthy balance of contemplative solemnity and hearty laughter, I found this session to be educational, welcoming and inclusive. Catherine is a brilliant presenter of a topic I suspect many would shy away from yet somehow she embraces it with a light heart, in support - in celebration - of us all who attended, and the people we care for. If the thought of attending this is challenging I would strongly invite you to GO FOR IT!"

- Chris, A Dad.

• "Thank you Catherine, it was lovely to meet you. I am grateful for all the material you have sent. The course was probably the most useful course I have attended as a parent! It’s very refreshing to be given useful and practical advice from someone who has lived it! Very often training material is for young people with a higher cognitive ability. You deliver a very useful course about a very delicate subject with the correct level of information, sensitivity, practical advice and humour! I would urge every parent and carer of young people/teenagers with severe learning disabilities to attend this course!I would also like to say that I find your Facebook page very empowering and am so grateful for your honesty. It’s rare, and it’s brave, but it is incredibly helpful for those of us on a similar journey to yours. The love and pride I have for my son is immeasurable, but it doesn’t stop this life from being hard! Keep doing what you do. Thank you."

- Sally, parent.

• "Just wanted to say a huge thanks for a brilliant session. As a professional with 25 years' experience of working with people with learning disabilities and an interest in sexuality and relationships, I learnt so much from this session. In particular, gaining an appreciation of the difficulties parents experience when their child starts to have a sexual interest. The emotional whirlwind that parents find themselves in needs to be appreciated by professionals so that we can understand how best to support all those involved. This course gave me a brilliant chance to gain an insight into this world."

- Matt Box, Community Learning Disability Matron – E. Sussex & Brighton.
