Individual Learning Journeys: Supporting SLT Assistant Practitioner's in their development in role

There is a focus on frameworks for Competency Development and an introduction to the RCSLT SWF approach (Support Worker Framework) toolkit.

The RCSLT framework for supporting the development of Assistant Practitioners was launched in June 2023. The materials are already available online on the RCSLT website.

RADAR is a simplified practical tool based on the RCSLT toolkit for Support Worker development. It gives a visual focus for a conversation and provides a way of tracking of competency development in an individual role. It gives something for an Assistant to own and use in their development in role.

The study day covers how to use this tool to simplify the process and still provide a robust development plan for assistants to extend their skills.

RADAR: Reflective Approach to Developing Assistant's in Role.

The excel spreadsheet with RADAR will be provided as part of the course. It is a simple tool which is used as the basis of a conversation between a supervisor and assistant. A minimum of 4 Competencies are chosen for inclusion in an Individual Development Journey - and the paperwork is minimal.

The following topics will be explored during the day:

  • Background – why this course is needed
  • Supporting Assistant Practitioners - What do Assistants say?
  • Barriers & Complications - What do SLTs say?
  • The HEE AHP Support Worker Competency, Education and Career Development Framework (2021)
  • The SWF (Support Worker Framework) developed by RCSLT
  • Risk assessing roles

A Framework for learning and development including:

  • Work based learning
  • Reflective practice - refresher on reflective models
  • Logging Learning
  • The Core Competencies
  • The Role specific Clinical Competencies for SLT
  • Practical Implementation of Framework
  • Adapting competency profile to a specific job role
  • Taking on the role of Competency Coach
  • Themes in development, support and supervision

The emphasis on this course is on putting the new framework into practice in a busy workplace with the realities of limited time resource. Opportunity for sharing experiences and ideas in small groups.
