Description

OVERVIEW

The purpose of this Work Group is to explore ways to embed technology into the teaching and learning of A level mathematics, so that the use of technology supports and enhances conceptual understanding, rather than being an add-on. This is not a ‘How To Use’ course on any particular technology: it should, however, encourage participants to continue to develop their skills.

This course will support those who are teaching the new specification for A Level Maths. Teachers of A Level Statistics and Core Maths will also find this course useful. It is advised that institutions send two teachers where possible to facilitate collaboration and promote and support on-going learning within their teams.

During this programme which involves 2 face to day CPD days, and completion of gap tasks including a reflective learning log, we will address both the technical aspect of how to use technology (advanced scientific calculators, graphing packages, spreadsheets, large data sets etc) as well as consider appropriate pedagogies for using technology in the classroom. We will look at the content of the new specifications and consider how the teaching of different areas of mathematics can be enhanced by the use of technology.

As part of day 1, participants will be asked to plan and then deliver a lesson informed by this work. They will be required to feedback on the lesson as part of day 2.

Following the course, the Great North Maths Hub will facilitate cluster meetings with groups of local school to continue to continue to work on the ideas explored in the course and to understand the impacts on students.

INTENDED OUTCOMES

Teachers will develop:

● Knowledge of where, when and how to use technology to enhance understanding/learning/experience.
● Confidence and competence to use applications of technology.
● Confidence to develop their own technology skills and further embed the appropriate and effective use of technology.

At a department level, schools will receive support in embedding the use of technology in their A level SoWs, changing department practice to involve sustained use of technology, and signposting to appropriate resources. They will be encouraged to develop professional development approaches, within school, where technology is an integral part of the process.

EXPECTATIONS

Participants will be expected to provide certain school data to assist with evaluation of the impact of the Work Group.

Participants must attend both CPD days, as well as completing the Gap Task between the workshops and recording through a reflective journal.

In advance of the programme start, participants will be asked to conduct an initial audit of technological skills across their department.
