Event description
A training day for healthcare professionals and others who want to promote and protect women's human rights in maternity care.

About this Event

Birthrights, the charity devoted to human rights in maternity care, will be delivering a training day on "Supporting women's autonomy in childbirth" in Newcastle on Wednesday 22nd April.

The workshop is multi-disciplinary. It is for doctors and midwives working in maternity settings but students, antenatal teachers, doulas, members of Maternity Voices Partnerships and anyone else with an interest in maternity care are also welcome.

The workshop will give an introduction to human rights law and principles and why they matter in childbirth. We will answer questions such as:

- Can safe care also be personalised care?

- What really is informed consent? What does the law tell us to do?

- Do women have a right to out of guidelines care?

- Could we do more to prevent birth trauma rather than treating it?

We will examine maternity practices that violate human rights and consider what a human rights centred maternity service looks like, and how those working with pregnant women, can support them to make informed choices and to have those choices respected.

We will also be looking at documenting for choice and how to have choice conversations in practice.

Birthrights is highly influential in the maternity policy sphere and the leading training organisation on human rights in maternity care. We train over 1,000 healthcare professionals each year. What people say about our training:

“ I just wanted to write and say an enormous thank you to Birthrights for the hard work and excellent delivery that makes your study days some of the best I have ever attended. ‘Thought-provoking’ doesn’t really cover it – left me totally rethinking my practice and my interactions with women."

"One of THE best study days I have ever been on (and I’ve been on quite a few), it will definitely improve my practice."
