Supporting young people through age disputes: mental health and holistic best practice

Join the Helen Bamber Foundation and Young Roots as we launch our new joint report and share the Helen Bamber Foundation's latest mental health research on the impact of age disputes on children seeking asylum.

Our report, They Made Me Feel Like Myself, shows what a trauma-informed, holistic approach to supporting young people can look like, and how this can help professionals to build an authentic picture of a young person’s age. This approach not only helps with assessing age but also reduces the harm that the process causes.

Join us to find out more, ask questions, and share your experiences of supporting young people.

Clinical psychologists from the Helen Bamber Foundation will discuss their findings from working with a focus group of age-disputed children seeking asylum, including those who were ultimately found to be children and those who were not. We will share the key themes that emerged from this focus group, along with mental health outcome data, in aid of supporting best practice and mitigating the mental health and well-being impact on age-disputed children. With increasing numbers of children experiencing age disputes, and with its impact on mental health and well-being, this research is extremely timely.
