About this event

If you have a highly sensitive child who is coping with more than average amount of anxiety, this workshop could be helpful to you. Spend the day with Barbara Allen-Williams and Rosie Leigh exploring what high sensitivity is, how anxiety manifests and what we as parents can do to help. There will be plenty of information, plus time for discussion and tools to take away with you.

Tea and coffee will be provided. Please bring a packed lunch and a notebook, an open mind and sense of humour. This will be a small group so as to give enough time to explore your hopes for the day and to think about questions you may have about your child, high sensitivity or anxiety. Please be aware that there is an expectation that participants will respect the privacy of others on the workshop.

Barbara Allen-Williams is a highly experienced professional in the field of high sensitivity and has received training from Elaine Aron PhD. She is semi-retired, having spent thirty years in the personal development field as a therapist, specialist in high sensitivity, a group worker and supervisor. She currently hosts events for HSPs, training for professionals, is a mentor for highly sensitive people and a speaker on the topic of high sensitivity.

Rosie Leigh is a certified NLP practitioner and member of the NLP Association of Excellence (NLPEA). She is a coach and mentor and has a background in trauma informed practice, supporting highly sensitive children and adults. She has compassion focused training, and has worked in custodial settings with substance misuse and behaviour change around unhealthy behaviours within relationships. She works in education with students aged 16 and over, and in private practice with children, mentoring, empowering and supporting mental health and wellbeing. Rosie is also a safeguarding consultant and trainer for various companies.

The workshop takes place in Andover. It is approximately 1.5 miles from Andover station, there are taxis nearby. There is parking available at the venue for 6/7 cars. This is a private domestic venue, there are two steps up into the training area, the toilet is on the same floor.

Directions: We advise to print these directions and bring them with you. From A303 take turning to A343. At garden centre roundabout take first exit towards Andover town centre. After 400m turn right into unmarked road (see telegraph pole with orange bands). Go straight down and nose car right up close to black gates with HSP sign, they will open automatically or use the button on the right. NB: some sat navs take you to Foundry Road but the entrance to our lane is off Salisbury Road.

Frequently asked questions

What age group is this workshop aimed at?

This workshop is aimed at parents of highly sensitive children aged 5-18. Please let us know the age of your child when you book so that we can make sure we cater for your particular age group. Please do not bring your child along, all parents will want to be able to speak freely.

How much do I need to know about high sensitivity?

It can help you to have read Elaine Aron’s book ‘The highly sensitive child’, but this is not mandatory.

Do both parents need to attend?

Either parent can attend, if both come you will need a ticket each.

How do I know if my child is highly sensitive?

You could look at Elaine Aron’s self test for children at www.hsperson.com. Generally, you will notice your child is deep and reflective, is good at understanding social cues, has intense feelings, notices subtleties, is creative and has a tendency to get upset more quickly than other children.

Will I be able to ask questions about my child’s individual situation?

Yes, this is an educational workshop but there will be opportunity at specific times to ask questions and to discuss your situation with the facilitators and other parents. However, there will naturally be a limit as to how much time we have for in-depth conversation around each parent’s situation.

Confidentiality

We ask participants to respect the confidentiality of others at the workshop. Please also take responsibility for only sharing what feels safe and comfortable for you.

What is the nearest train station or airport

The nearest train station is Andover, about 1.5 miles from the venue. There are taxis outside the station. The nearest airport is Southampton which is right next to Southampton Parkway station (about an hour’s train journey). Andover station is about an hour from London Waterloo station.

When can I arrive?

You are welcome to come in any time after 9.30am. We start at 10am.

Is there any overnight accommodation nearby?

Yes. There are two guest rooms with shared bathroom in the main house on site on Friday 19th (we charge a small fee for these, payable in advance, first come first served) and there are a number of airbnb, hotels and bed and breakfasts in the local area and surrounding villages.

I have a question about the workshop that is not covered in the event details, who can I contact?

You can email Barbara on hspsensitive@icloud.com. You can also call or text 0777 312 4854, but please be aware Barbara is unable to consult on issues about your child over the telephone.

What about food?

Tea, coffee and biscuits will be provided. Let us know if you have any dietary issues we need to know about. Please bring a packed lunch. There is a microwave if you need to warm anything through and the local Dobbies garden centre has a restaurant.

Access

This training takes place in an extension to a normal domestic venue. The driveway is gravel. There are two steps into the training area, the toilet is on the same level.

Parking

There is room for 6/7 cars in the drive, drive in and then reverse park so it is easier to get out. Dobbies garden centre is a 10 minute walk if you want to leave your car or car share down to the venue. If walking, cross the road opposite Dobbies and walk the path behind the hedges.
