In recent years household recycling rates have ‘plateaued’ at around 42% to 44%. To address this, the UK Government has repealed the EU-derived waste collection requirements and introduced improved and simplified requirements through the Environment Act 2021.
Therefore, under the new requirements:
- All local authorities in England must collect the same recyclable waste streams for recycling or composting from households. The recyclable waste streams include paper and card, plastic, glass, metal, food waste, and garden waste
- All non-household municipal premises in England (such as businesses, schools and hospitals), must make arrangements to have the same set of recyclable waste streams (with the exception of garden waste) collected for recycling or composting, and must present their waste in accordance with the arrangements.
To support members understanding of current legislation, we will run a thought leadership event to support members understanding of their waste legislation obligations, in order to help members better understand the impact on them and any direct implications, including ensuring compliance.
Playing catch-up is never a good idea, especially when it comes to matters of compliance. In this event, we will share legislative updates, as well as sharing information as to how to practically implement the changes required, in the most effective and cost-efficient way.
