ETS Cymru are hosting two dynamic workshops designed to empower youth workers across Wales with the knowledge and tools to support political engagement among young people. These sessions will explore how political structures operate in Wales, the vital role youth workers play in democratic participation, and practical ways to inspire young people to get involved.

Both workshops will be facilitated by qualified youth worker Kelly Harris, with contributions from guest speakers.

Session 1: What’s Politics Got to Do with Youth Work?Date: Thursday 25th SeptemberTime: 13:00-15:00

This session will explore:

  • How political systems in Wales function, including:
    • The structure and powers of the Welsh Parliament
    • The distinction between the Welsh Parliament and Welsh Government
    • The role of the UK Parliament in Welsh affairs
  • Upcoming democratic changes in the Welsh Parliament ahead of the May 2026 elections.
  • How youth workers can engage with political structures through Committees and the Petitions system.
  • How youth work principles support political engagement, with examples of effective practice.
  • A Q&A session to delve deeper into the topics discussed.

Session 2: The Role of Youth Workers in Political Engagement & Amplifying Youth VoiceDate: Thursday 2nd OctoberTime: 13:00-15:00

This session will cover:

  • The unique role youth workers play in fostering political engagement, including navigating personal political values.
  • Opportunities and challenges in engaging with political structures, and strategies for addressing misinformation.
  • The history and current context of Votes@16, and how youth workers can support young people’s participation.
  • “What about the Article 12 of it all?” – a powerful contribution from young person Arthur Templeman-Lilley on youth voice in politics and what young people expect from youth workers.
  • A Q&A session to reflect on and expand the discussion.
