Event description
Build confidence in supporting young people with mental health issues!

About this Event

New Pathways' SURE for Mental Health Community Project is providing fully funded mental health training to members of the community (particularly volunteers) to build confidence in supporting people with mental health issues.

Our SURE for Mental Health Adolescent course is to provide parents/guardians of, or people who work with, young people, with a better understanding about how the adolescent brain works and how mental health can impact young people - and how to respond appropriately.

This training is funded by the Lottery Community Fund and has been developed to enable people who do not have access to Mental Health training, due to monetary restrictions, to get mental health awareness training that we believe everyone should have. The course has been developed by New Pathways, and ratified by Mental Health professionals.

At the end of the course participants will be able to:

• Understand Mental Health

• Understand current trends regarding Young People and Mental Health

• Recognise common Mental Health issues (Anxiety, Depression, Schizophrenia and Bipolar)

• Recognise Self Harm and Eating Disorders

• Respond to someone with a Mental Health issue, and know how to refer to support

• Understand self-help techniques, recovery and self-care

• Demonstrate an understanding of the skills needed to respond to someone who is suicidal and potentially preserve life

This training runs from 9.30am-4.30pm

This training is open to, and suitable for, anyone in the community, from volunteers and community workers to people who want to help their family and friends; and is particularly useful for those with no previous mental health training.

The course is supplemented by our SURE for Mental Health mobile phone app, which has handy how-to guides.

Lunch is not provided, but you are welcome to bring your own food with you.

Tea, Coffee, water and biscuits will be available throughout the day.

Parking: There is no parking at New Pathways, Newport. The nearest car park is the Newport NCP - Old Post Office Site, High St, Newport NP20 4AX

Because these places are fully funded by the lottery, please try and let us know at least one week in advance if you can no longer attend. Non-attendance may affect your place on future courses.
