Description

Surveying Higher Education and Other Corporate Finances
A hands-on, one-day research workshop

Date: Tuesday 19 September, 10.30am−4.30pm.

It is no longer novel to suggest the university has become a business. This shift is only reinforced and confirmed by recent changes to the accounting standards universities must follow. Alongside the ostensibly public -- but de facto increasingly corporate -- university, we are seeing the rapid growth of a private higher education sector, with many explicitly for-profit companies. The University of Buckingham, long the UK's only private university, was joined in 2012 by the for-profit New College for Humanities. Kaplan, Inc. is fast expanding its activities in Britain, while publishers of academic journals (especially Elsevier and Taylor & Francis) and of textbooks (Pearson and so on) have for several years been the target of attacks for their exploitative business models. This transformation is accompanied by changes in the pattern of student accommodation: the purpose-built student accommodation market is estimated to be worth £46 billion and offers attractive profits to investors.

The aim of this workshop is to survey this expanding market and to uncover and map the connections between its various actors and institutions. The workshop will be a hands-on training event, providing participants with the skills necessary to locate and interrogate company accounts and other financial information.

The workshop will be led by Richard Whittell from Corporate Watch.

The workshop is primarily aimed at PhD students, but others are also welcome. Although focused on the financial ecology of the higher education market, the skills are transferrable to other sectors.

The workshop is free but numbers are strictly limited, so if you wish to come please book your place as soon as possible. Please sign up here.

The workshop is organised jointly by the Centre for Philosophy and Political Economy, the Contemporary Organization and Policy Forum and the University of Leicester School of Business.
