FAQs

What to Expect: A experience that will take you out of your comfort zone, enable you to challenge yourself and teach you new skills.

The Island: Flat Holm Island is five miles off the coast of South Wales, a hidden jewel in the Bristol Chanel, unique in character. It is wild, remote and isolated. It is also a Site of Specific Scientific Interest and a Nature Reserve, abundant in natural wonder and basked in military history.

The Itinerary (timings to be confirmed): Day 1: you take to the seas in a speed boat, crossing from Cardiff's Mermaid Quay Harbour to Flat Holm Island. Your first task will be to set up camp and learn how to prepare your rations for your evening meal. Day 2: Your ex-Royal Marine Commando team leader will teach you basic survival skills including: fire lighting, fresh water collection, orienting, signalling and weapon building. Day 3: Your survival skills will be tested before an early morning rescue. You will return to Mermaid Quay.

Your Kit: You will be provided with all your camping equipment (except a sleeping bag and mat). You will need to bring: waterproof boots/shoes, waterproof jacket and trousers, warm jumper or fleece, comfortable trousers, spare clothes, hat, gloves, sleeping bag, sleeping mat, saucepan/mess tin (1 litre), cutlery, water bottle, mug, penknife/multitool, torch, 2 bin bags, personal medicines and toiletries. There is a 10kg allowance per person including your optional extras.

Optional Extras: For every £50 that you exceed your fundraising target you can bring one of the following luxury items: whistle, bag of sweets (250g), bag of crisps (250g), soft drink (1 litre), pillow, pyjamas, dry shampoo, hairbrush, notepad and pen or teddy bear.

Fundraising: Helen & Douglas House will be on hand to support you as you fundraise for your challenge; from regular emails with case studies, photos, hints and tips, to materials such as balloons, collection tins and banners. We are also happy to talk to you about your ideas and assist you to create a plan.

Participants: There are 19 spaces available on this expedition.

The Weather: Survival Island is off the coast of Wales. The weather can change quickly so you will need to be prepared for rain, wind sun and even hail!

Drinks and Meals: The team will provide basic ingredients so you can cook your own meals. They will show you how to find your own food and how to prepare it. Drinking water will be provided. Dietary requirements can be catered for, so please ensure you let us know in advance.

Mobile Signal: There is moderate signal on the island but we encourage you to go mobile free as part of the challenge (do not worry there is a 24/7 support line for emergencies). If you do want to use your mobile please interact with us on social media using #HDHSurvivalIsland.

Complexity/Leaving Early: The experience is meant to challenge you. But rest assured, you will not be shouted at or be made to do something you don't want to. Once on the island, except in the case of an emergency, the only way back to the mainland will be when the boat comes to collect you on day three.
