Description

Overview

This interactive workshop is focused on how to prepare for your PhD viva and about how to make decisions about what to do afterwards. Two recent PhD graduates will attend the workshop to discuss their experiences of the viva and how they made decisions about their next steps.

Who is this session for?

This workshop is open to all postgraduate researchers. Those expecting to submit their thesis within the next 18 months or less may find it particularly useful.

Surviving the viva

During this part of the session we will address questions such as:

  • What is the PhD viva?

  • How does it work?

  • What is it like to be examined in this way?

  • What are examiners looking for?

  • How does one prepare for a viva?

  • What are the possible outcomes of a viva?

Beyond the viva

The session will provide an opportunity to discuss how to begin thinking about life after your viva, with information provided about resources that might assist you further with this.

Workshop leader

The workshop will be led by Dr Jennifer Fraser, formerly from the Centre for Transformative Practice in Learning and Teaching at Birkbeck. Jennifer has run this session on previous occasions and feedback from students has been consistently positive.
