Description

**Due to the popularity of this event, we have had to find a bigger venue! -- Mill Lane Lecture Room 4 is just a 3 minute walk away from the David Attenborough Building.**

February 2018 is the Spotlight on Sustainable Research month at the University of Cambridge. As part of this month, the University's Environment & Energy team are holding this event drawing on research and expertise at the University to provide practical pointers and tips to University staff and students who want to encourage pro-environmental behaviour. Three short talks focus on key areas that we know people struggle with when they are trying to encourage sustainable behaviours in their own places of work and study:

How to frame it

Cameron Brick from the Department of Psychology's research focuses on the psychology of responses to society-level problems such as climate change. Cameron uses motivations and social identities to build studies on communication and behavior in social contexts, and design effective messaging to boost comprehension and quality decision making. Cameron will talk about communicating and targeting messaging on sustainability.

How to change it

Emma Garnett from the Department of Zoology is researching which interventions work to reduce the environmental impact of diets. Her project spans the natural and social sciences as well as public health and behavioural psychology. Emma will talk about how sustainable choices can be made easy, including through simple 'nudges', choice architecture and changes in the environment.

How to steer it

Paul Begley from the Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership (CISL) leads the Institute's customised programmes portfolio. He has designed programmes to help organisations such as Arup, the African Development Bank, Standard Chartered and Tata extract commercial value from the changing context. Paul will draw on CISL's experiences to discuss ‘leading change’ and getting senior level buy in on sustainability.

After our speakers there will be the opportunity for questions and further discussion, until 2pm.
