What is net zero?

Put simply, net zero means cutting greenhouse gas emissions to as close to zero as possible, with any remaining emissions re-absorbed from the atmosphere, by oceans and forests for instance. United Nations

Setting a target to be carbon net zero has become a key focus for many Fit for the Future members, with many at different stages of understanding what net zero means and how they can approach and attain it.  Key challenges including:

Is there a standard net zero definition?  What guidance and resources are available to support you?

How do you calculate your baseline emissions (what do you include)?

How do you set a realistic net zero target?

How do you get buy-in from all levels of your organisation?

How do you move from target setting to developing a strategy and practical/impactful activity for delivery?

How do you approach scope 3 emissions for example purchased goods, transport and waste?

What is the role of land use and offsetting?

How do you monitor and demonstrate progress?

What are 'science-based targets' and how do they align with and support net zero standards (including framework and tools)?

The Fit for Future network is continuing to focus on this key area.  In 2023 we will deliver a range of events and signpost to guidance and resources to support members develop their sustainability strategies. In the first virtual event of the series, Zach Lewis (National Specialist - Low Carbon Adviser at the National Trust) will provide an overview and update on the National Trust’ strategy with regards to it’s approach to net zero (looking at the key challenges outlined above).  By 2030 the National Trust will be carbon net zero across its own emissions and those created by its supply chain, tenanted land and buildings, and investments.

There will be an opportunity to ask Zach questions and to join in a group discussion, allowing you to share learning, progress, challenges and questions with other members across the network who are on the same journey.

All members are welcome to attend, regardless of previous experience or knowledge on this topic.  The session will be of benefit to all network members, whatever your size and scope of operations/activity.  From organisations just starting off to those already delivering a net zero strategy there will be lots to share and collaborate on, from identifying collective challenges to learning from other approaches.
