Description

Conservatives Party Conference 2017

David Cameron wanted to double the number of students in higher education by 2020, and as we hurtle towards that deadline it is becoming increasingly clear that proactive, smart policies are required to sustain these promises. This is especially the case when it comes to reversing negative education trends for particular areas and groups. In 2016, the higher education entry rate for children in receipt of free school meals (FSM) was 16.1%, only 0.3 percentage points higher than in 2015, whereas the rate had increased five times that for children not in receipt of FSM from 2015-16.

This event, with Lord David Willetts, former Minister of State for Universities and Science, will explore how access to education can continue to be prioritised as a key issue for the Government, and will attempt to identify what policies would support increased access across the country.

Chair:

Will Dunn - New Statesman Special Projects Editor

Speakers:

Lord Willetts - Former Minister of State for Universities and Science

Dr Graeme Atherton - Chief Executive, National Education Opportunities Network

Shakira Martin - National Union of Students President

Professor Kathryn Mitchell - Vice Chancellor, University of Derby
