Description

Event Background:

The British parliament has declared a climate emergency, while the government’s Industrial Strategy has identified ‘Clean Growth’ as one of its four Grand Challenges expected to transform our future. The fashion industry has demonstrated strong leadership on a range of social and environmental issues and recognises that it now has a major part to play in tackling the challenges of carbon emissions and plastic waste. More than half a million people work in fashion, textiles and fashion retail, and it has a footprint to match – after housing, transport and food, it is thought that clothing has the fourth largest environmental impact.

To this end, the British Fashion Council and Innovate UK are hosting an event to look at how sustainable innovation can be fostered, and how businesses can work across their supply chains to transition fashion into a zero-carbon industry. This means new thinking and collaborations to address a range of complex problems, including:

  • Examining how current design, manufacturing, retail and consumer behaviour impacts on the environment

  • How to innovate and encourage uptake of new fibres, textiles, design and manufacturing processes that reduce environmental impacts

  • Development of new business models to increase the volume of clothing that is re-used and recycled into new clothing

  • How to work with government to support delivery of its ambitions and best prioritise investment in relation to resource efficiency and reducing environmental impacts in fashion
