Workshop content: -
The session aims to explore the possibilities of textile waste, by recycling old garments using a range of simple techniques:-
- Making own yarns from a variety of fabrics
- Visible repair, using patching and darning to make a statement
- Adding knitting to both fabric and old knitted pieces
There will be demonstrations of yarn making and repair techniques for both woven and knitted textiles. The class includes a worksheet, PowerPoint presentation, and samples to inspire further ideas for after the session.
All levels of ability are welcome. The workshop is aimed at anyone with an interest in textiles. Attendees can create an experimental sample during the workshop, and adapt the techniques to create either artworks, or useful objects such as garments, accessories and household items.
Materials and equipment: -
- Yarn, any conventional knitting yarn
- Fabric, a closely woven cotton fabric, jersey T-shirt fabric, jeans or any other unwanted garment.
- Old knitted garments.
- Knitting needles or crochet hooks, larger sized needles or hooks 6mm or more (for knitting with recycled textile yarns), plus knitting needles suitable for your chosen yarn.
- Scissors, for cutting fabric and plastic
- Hand Needles, preferably large-eyed tapestry needles
- Thread, for hand sewing
- Internet access, with a microphone and webcam. Please only book is you are able to attend in real time.

Who is the course aimed at? Adults, wishing to explore the creative potential of knitting, to create art and sculpture.
What level? Basic knitting skills, including knit stitch, casting on and off.
How will the course be delivered? Online using Microsoft Teams, you will be able to join as a guest, and will be sent a joining link a few days prior to the workshop. The language of instruction will be English.
