Event description
A workshop to develop campaigns for better rail and better bus services and infrastructure across Sussex

About this Event

Due to the outbreak of coronavirus (COVID-19) and based on Government advice this event has been postponed to minimise the spread of the virus.See the new date in October 2020 as below

This workshop is organised by South Coast Alliance for Transport and the Environment (SCATE)

tea and coffee is included in the price

Objectives for this conference are:

Rail transport – take advantage of the opportunity afforded by the recent announcement of the UK Department of Transport to fund the restoration of closed railway links. We hope that a group can be formed to both campaign and propose to the government the restoration of the Lewes to Uckfield railway line.

Rail services – a rail user group for Lewes has been formed on Facebook. This conference will give the opportunity for commuters and travellers to form a team to lead the interface with the rail operator to ensure the Lewes rail travellers' voices are heard to, share information and gain improvements to the rail service in the area.

Bus transport - apart from the main links such as the numbers 28 and 29 bus services in Lewes and Newhaven supported by the town councils, bus services in the countryside have remained the poor cousin as investment has been cut over the years. The government has promised that something will be done and hopefully a group will be formed at this workshop to communicate a strong message to ensure our area gets a share of any funding.

The event will start with a brief introduction and then we hope attendees will join one of the 3 tables in order to work on the 3 themes to be covered at the workshop. These 3 groups can discuss how to move forward to take advantage of government money and or how to campaign for sustainable investment:

  1. Rail infrastructure - Lewes to Uckfield line and other capital projects
  2. Rail services - a team to lead the Lewes rail users group
  3. Bus services - a team to campaign for better rural bus services

Hopefully, the workshop will conclude with a presentation from each of the 4 groups on how they may wish to take things further.
