Description

Do Androids Dream of Electric Waste?

Our new digital economies are shaping a new environmental footprint for the creative industries, both through the energy powering the cloud and through the raw materials and energy used to sustain our new ecology of devices and gadgets. What does our technology look like from the inside, where does it come from, and where can it go?

The 'circular economy' describes a system in which every material is repurposed and recycled, or safely biodegraded into the environment. This workshop is part of a series exploring how to make this a reality in the creative industries.

Focusing on e-waste and the fast-moving developments in music technology, participants will be guided through a deconstruction of familiar devices and equipment (including our ubiquitous smartphones) and map out material sources and supply chains as we go.

Using the ‘Four Design Models’ for a circular economy, we want to look at different options for redesign and behaviour change towards a circular system and explore how this might work in the arts and creative industries.

The session is led by the RSA's Great Recovery project team and Julie's Bicycle.
